5 Things To Do in January
Written by Jennifer Nickert
January is well known for
its new beginning and fresh start. Many make their New Year’s
Resolutions, a list of things they’d like to change or to improve
their life.
1. Ice Sculptures. If you are
fortunate enough to live in a cold setting January is often the
best time for ice sculptures or to make some of your own. Children
and adults alike love the beautiful cold temporary artwork. Ice
sculptors all over the world use chisels, chain saws, and more
intricate tools.
You may not want to bust out with the
chain saw, but you can create your own ice sculptures by buying
ice molds, fun cake pans, or trying to carve something yourself.
You can get a normal scare baking pan and freezing water in it.
Carefully slide the block of ice out and with an ice chipper, work
on a creation of your own.
2. New Year’s
Resolutions. A fresh start is what January brings. A
brand new year. This year instead of thinking about one or two
tasks you “should” do to improve your life try the 101 Tasks in
1001 Days challenge. It took me an entire day to come up with my
own list, but it really made me think about my life and gave me
some direction.
If you’re not ready for a list of 101
things, start with a small list of 5 things you’d like to
accomplish this year. Give yourself some goals to reach for that
will improve your life in the long run. Instead of saying, “lose
five pounds”, say “I will eat healthier at least 4 days a week”.
Or instead of a vague “I will get out of debt” be more specific
and say “I will pay off at least one credit card this year.”
Make your list, print it out and place it in a few places you
can remind yourself about it. Place a copy in your wallet, so when
you go to buy those new jeans you see your goal is to pay off
debt, place a copy over your desk, and one on your bathroom
mirror, so you see it every morning.
3. Fly a
Kite. Bundle up and find a park or beach to enjoy an hour
of fresh air and setting something fun or beautiful aloft. January
tends to be crisp and windy, so your kite will really sail. Take a
date, your kids or friends out and have a contest, see who can get
their kite up fastest and who can go the highest and keep it up
the longest. Make it a drinking game.
Go to YouTube and
search for stunt kite flying for some tricks and tips. Make sure
to sing the Mary Poppins, “Let’s Go Fly A Kite” song and have fun
with it.
4. Order a Set of Thank You Cards or
Personalized Stationary. Hopefully you are grateful to
your family and friends for their thoughtfulness in the last few
months. Nothing puts a smile on someone’s face like a card in the
mail. A thoughtful thank you or thinking of you with your own
personalized stationary is elegant and classy.
You can buy
cute prepackaged stationary at most stores or have some custom
made with your name or photo. Think of the smile you will give
someone. I get a little boost to my day when I get a card or
letter in with my stack of bills in my mail.
5.
Read a classic. Back to the basics, the ones that have
stood the test of time. I loved reading To Kill a Mockingbird and
Little Women. There is something about these wonderful books that
take you back to a different time and place. It’s relaxing and the
escape calms me from my hectic day to day schedule.
Other
benefits include increasing your vocabulary, history lessons,
giving you conversation starters at parties or first dates, to
name just a few.
